Butler County Engineer
Gregory J. Wilkens announces that repairs to the embankment slip
on Mauds Hughes Road are scheduled to begin Monday, August 27.
The Liberty Township road has been closed since February while
a permanent solution to the unstable hillside was engineered.
Erosion and lack of adequate vegetation growth to hold the hillside
in place were cited as reasons for the slippage.
The construction contract
for the project will be awarded Monday to W.G. Stang, Inc., which
submitted a low bid of $123,595. The BCEO paid for design and
engineering while Liberty Township will pay for the construction
costs. Repairs are expected to be completed by early October
2001.
Located between Princeton
Road and Millikin Road, the slip area will be rebuilt by cutting
out the weakened embankment. Crews will rebuild the slope by
using Geogrid to reinforce the hillside.
Geogrid is comprised
of net-shaped synthetic fibers used to reinforce earth-fill slopes.
The Geogrid is placed every few feet within alternating layers
of soil to provide a stabilizing force within the soil structure
itself. This stabilization occurs as the backfill interlocks
with the grid. Geogrids make it possible to build extremely stable
earthen structures at much lower costs than some older construction
methods.
