Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens reports that contracts have been awarded for two
major road projects in West Chester Township. Improvements to
Cox Road and construction of several new streets in conjunction
with a new medical complex are now under way.
The Cox Road project
involves widening the road from two to five lanes between Tylersville
Road and Hamilton Mason Road -- two lanes northbound, two southbound,
and a center turn lane, plus the addition of multiple turn lanes
at specific intersections. The intersection at Tylersville Road
will be also reconfigured and signals will be added at the new
University Drive, University Court, the VOA park drive, and Hamilton
Mason Road. Additionally, the traffic signal at the entrance
to Kohl's on Tylersville Road will be modified as part of the
project.
A contract was awarded
to SK Construction of Middletown which submitted a low bid of
$4,357,518. Butler County Tax Increment Financing (TIF) will
be utilized to pay for the Cox Road improvements. When completed
in late November, this section of Cox will be upgraded from a
township road to a County-maintained road.
"This is considered
phase one of a long range plan to extend Cox Road north of Hamilton
Mason to Ohio 129, which will be extended east of I-75,"
Wilkens said. "There are plans for commercial development
in that area which will benefit Liberty Township. But providing
another access to I-75 will also help alleviate congestion in
the vicinity of the Tylersville / I-75 interchange."
The Butler County Engineer's
Office is also working closely with the University of Cincinnati
Physicians Medical Center to facilitate street construction in
their new complex, which is currently being built on the site
of the old McGinnis Park off of Cox Road. A contract was awarded
by the BCEO to the Armrel Byrnes Company which submitted a low
bid of $1,534,458 for the construction of University Drive, University
Court, and Cox Lane.
Scheduled for completion
by the end of June, the project is also being funded through
a Butler County TIF.
Cox Road
To Close
Cox Road will close
to thru traffic during construction; however, access to local
businesses will be maintained. Beginning Monday, April 29, 2002
(closing date revised 4/22/02), the road will be closed between
Tylersville Road and the VOA park entrance. Access to the VOA,
Service Center Drive, and all points north will be from Hamilton
Mason Road.
The posted detour will
re-route northbound Cox Road traffic east on Tylersville Road,
north on Butler Warren Road, and west on Hamilton Mason Road.
Southbound Cox Road traffic will reverse this route.
Motorists are encouraged
to check the Road Closings
page on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible date
and status changes concerning this closure.
