Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens reports that the Tylersville Road / Cox Road intersection
in West Chester Township will close beginning Friday, May 2,
2003 at 8:00 p.m. The intersection is scheduled to reopen at
6:00 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2003. The closure is necessary to allow
crews to grind down old pavement, resurface with new pavement,
and add line striping to the intersection.
All through traffic
on Tylersville Road and Cox Road will be detoured -- please see
links to the detour map below. Officials with the Butler County
Engineer's Office and the West Chester Township Police Department
emphasize that both roads will be completely closed at the intersection
and motorists should avoid the intersection area if at all possible.
"We realize this
is an extremely busy section of road with very high traffic volumes,"
Wilkens noted. "However, a full closure over the course
of one weekend will enable crews to do the job safely and quickly.
Through discussions with the contractor, local businesses, and
various officials from West Chester Township, including the police
department, everyone felt the best alternative was to complete
the job in the shortest time frame possible." Attempting
to keep the roads open to one lane of traffic would result in
massive traffic jams for a prolonged period of time, back up
traffic on nearby I-75 during workday rush hours, and create
a dangerous work environment for construction crews.
The intersection work
is in conjunction with the Cox Road widening project which began
last year and is slated for completion by early June. A final
surface course of asphalt will be applied to Cox Road with final
line striping following the intersection closure. See Cox Road
on the Road Closings page
for details.
Rain Date
The Tylersville / Cox
intersection will close the evening of May 2 through Monday morning,
May 5 only if the weather forecast is favorable for the
entire weekend. Rain or inclement weather for even part of the
weekend would prevent all of the necessary work from being performed.
The weekend of May 16-19 has been selected as a rain date in
the event of unfavorable weather.
Motorists are encouraged
to check the Road Closings
page here on the BCEO web site as the best source for possible
date and status change concerning this closure.
