A Butler County Engineer's
Office employee has received the prestigious Life Saver Award
from the Greater Hamilton Safety Council. Johnny Smith was recently
honored for saving the life of a local man who was struck by
a vehicle.
On the morning of December
6, 2004, Smith was crossing the High Street bridge in Hamilton
when he observed a pedestrian crossing the bridge. The pedestrian
was struck by a car and knocked over the bank into a construction
area.
Smith stopped at the
scene, called for emergency services, and performed first-aid
for the injured pedestrian until medical help arrived. The pedestrian
was severely injured, suffering significant lacerations, and
could have remained unnoticed for some time had Smith not stopped
to help. Smith's prompt response likely saved the pedestrian's
life. The driver of the vehicle did return to the scene and assisted,
although he was visibly shaken, according to Smith.
The Life Saver Award
is a prestigious award that is given only two or three times
a year when the life of another person is saved under extraordinary
circumstances, according to Mark Couto, Chairman of the Board
of the Greater Hamilton Safety Council. "Citizens like Johnny
make this community a great place to live. Our citizens look
out for the welfare of even those they don't know. It's an honor
to present this award to a truly upstanding individual."
Butler County Engineer
Greg Wilkens said "We here at the Engineer's Office are
extremely proud of Johnny's heroic accomplishment. It speaks
volumes about his character and to the integrity of our staff."
Smith has been employed at the BCEO for over six years and works
in the sign department.
