ANOTHER ROUNDABOUT COMING TO BUTLER COUNTY
Jacksonburg at Morganthaler to Close October 11
St. Clair Township

Two recently installed Butler County roundabouts have proven so successful that a third will soon be built and County Engineer Greg Wilkens said more are being considered for the future. The intersection of Jacksonburg Road and Morganthaler Road is a good roundabout candidate, according to Wilkens, due to its skewed angle and the fact that it doesn't meet state warrants for signals or a multi-way stop. The State of Ohio has very strict requirements for placement of signals and stop signs.

"Traffic on Morganthaler must now stop at the intersection but Jacksonburg Road traffic does not," said Wilkens. "Speed limits on both roads are 55 MPH, which may seem high, but are actually in accordance with state regulations for rural roads such as these." As with signals and signage, the State also determines speed limits based on various factors such as the amount of local development, roadway features, and accident history.

"Our options for improving this intersection have been limited so we believe a roundabout is the most consistent short and long term solution," Wilkens explained. "It didn't take long for us to realize their benefits, and feedback from motorists has been overwhelmingly positive."

The Engineer's Office installed roundabouts two years ago at Hamilton Mason Road and Liberty Fairfield Road / Vinnedge Road as well as at Lakota Drive West and Eagleridge Drive, both major intersections with substantial traffic volumes. Accidents have decreased and traffic flow is much smoother at each.

The new roundabout at Jacksonburg and Morganthaler will be a single lane roundabout that also addresses some of the sight distance problems at the intersection. Crews from Mt. Pleasant Blacktopping will begin work October 11 and are expected to complete the project by mid-December, weather permitting. Mt. Pleasant was awarded the contract for the job, submitting a low bid of $413,060. A combination of State OPWC grant money and local BCEO funds will be used to pay for the project.
